Pope wants Hamas to take Trump’s truce plan
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV has praised US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace initiative for Gaza as a “realistic proposal” and encouraged the Palestinian group Hamas to accept it within the designated timeframe.
Speaking to journalists outside Villa Barberini before returning to the Vatican on Tuesday, the Pope stated: “We hope they accept it; so far it seems a realistic proposal.” He emphasized the importance of a ceasefire and the release of hostages, adding: “There are very interesting elements.”
Addressing the humanitarian flotilla heading to Gaza amid ongoing tensions, Pope Leo highlighted the critical need for aid deliveries. “There is a desire to respond to a real humanitarian emergency,” he said, expressing hope that “there is no violence and that people are respected.”
The Pontiff also expressed concern over recent US discussions regarding the potential use of nuclear weapons following a high-level military meeting. “This way of speaking is worrying,” he said, noting that it reflects escalating tensions.
“We hope it is just rhetoric. We hope it works, but that there is no war; we must work for peace.”
On the ongoing Vatican trial concerning the management of Holy See funds, Pope Leo stated he would not intervene in the process. “It must proceed,” he remarked, leaving the case in the hands of judges and lawyers.
Trump revealed the 20-point plan on Monday in a press briefing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, aiming to resolve Israel’s conflict with Gaza.
